Cycle Relief 2005 Benefit Project

Water for Life Project (Mali)

Mali

Thanks to the contribution and effort made by all who supported Cycle Relief 2005, fifteen wells and sixteen latrines have been built in the most deprived areas of Mali. (The pictures on the left are from the 5 villages where construction has taken place).

The impact of the new water wells and latrines on the community will be regularly monitored by Islamic Relief and feedback provided via Cycle Relief updates.

Congratulations to all Cycle Relief 2005 participants who have helped to improve the lives of so many people in Mali. The impact of fresh water is felt by the villages where the wells are built and also thousands of people in surrounding areas.

A dramatic reduction in waterborne diseases such as dysentery, diarrhea and trachoma is expected because of the clean water supply and new latrines.

We also wish to thank all the staff at Islamic Relief including those based in Mali for their support.

"I am very happy with this well as well as all families of the village. With breakdown of the manual pump, I personally was to take the 20-litre can 5 times a day to fetch water. The Kolena whole population is happy with the construction of the open well and can just say thanks"

"We have been experiencing water shortage for years in this village. The shortage became acute 3 years due to the insufficiency of rains. Traditional wells start drying-up since the month of February. The sole manual pup of village has not been broken down over a year abd the community cannot afford the repair. For his bill, the technician is asking CFA 10,000fcfa. Today thanks to God and NGO Islamic Relief our problem is solved with the construction of an open well in Bagayogobougou".

"May the contruction of this well bring peace in the village! All we women wished was the completion of the wide diameter well contruction ALHAMDOULILAYI, we now have a wide diameter well which contains water. During the dry season we women used to spend half of the night and day searching water. There is one only manual pump in the village in permanent breakdown and spare parts are expensive and we cannot meet expenses for multiple repairs".
